green from Southern Spain and first white Greek asparagus

Double asparagus premiere at The Greenery

Today, The Greenery saw two firsts arrive: the first green asparagus from Southern Spain, and the first white Greek asparagus from heated cultivation. Both products are the result of a long-term cooperation of cultivation and commercial specialists from The Greenery with Southern European producers. The Greenery thus realizes its ambition to be the specialist and market leader in asparagus.

Cooperation with Spanish growers
Ton Bouw, import manager Spain: "For years, we have been working together intensively with a number of growers between Málaga and Granada. We translated the customer's wishes regarding quality, sorting, packing and food safety for our growers, who take this up without fail."

"In addition to the standard packaging of 8 x 500 grammes wrapped asparagus, we are now also making 250 g, 350 g and 450 g packs on the customer's request. This season, the product can also be supplied on foodtainer trays of 350 g. This product is packaged in the machines, where the Dutch green asparagus is also processed." The Spanish product is a nice addition to the product from South America. Thanks to the short transport distance, the product is fresher and has a smaller impact on the environment. The volumes are increasing fast thanks to the lovely weather in Southern Spain.

Dutch varieties and know-how combined with Greek skill
For the 7th year in a row, a group of Greek growers are cultivating heated asparagus with Dutch varieties in Greece, exclusively for The Greenery. This means the product is on the market a month before the regular Greek cultivation. By sorting the product in pool trays and boxes in the Netherlands, quality is guaranteed, and the product can also be offered peeled, making Greek Greenery asparagus a household name for wholesalers and exporters.

Sjraar Hulsman, Trade Manager: "The Greek asparagus is a welcome addition to our product range. We serve a different market segment with it than with the Dutch asparagus. And of course we try to supply our customers with peeled asparagus from the beginning to the end of the Dutch season. Peeled Dutch asparagus is often considered just a bit too expensive at this time of year. This Greek asparagus makes for a fine alternative, because when it comes to taste, tenderness and shelf life, it's comparable. The product from Peru has often been transported for four weeks. Of course you're going to see and taste that. That's why we stopped with those."
