"Rob Kuijper: "Yellow melon supply got going later"

Good sales yellow melons and watermelons Costa Rica

From early February onwards, importer Herman Kuijper BV from Amstelveen has received supplies of yellow melons and watermelons from Costa Rica. "For the first weeks, sales were crazy," Rob Kuijper says contently. "Warmer weather is expected as well, something that's always good for melon consumption."

Wet weather conditions in Costa Rica have had an impact on the melon production. "This has caused some quality problems, mainly with the yellow melons. That supply was a lot slower to get going. With the watermelons, there are fewer problems," Rob says. The melon season at Herman Kuijper's traditionally continues until late April.

"Demand is broad. Italy, France and Scandinavia are participating well, and Spain is also coming back on the market. There is always competition, but at the moment there aren't many newcomers on the market. Because of the exchange rate, you have to make a price that's now 20% higher, so there's not much room for gambling," the importer concludes.
