Germany: increase in chicory sales

The harvest of chicory is still in full swing in Germany. According to the 'Zentralverband Gartenbau', the vegetable is grown on around 281 hectares throughout Germany. "Around ten percent of the leafy vegetables sold in Germany consist of chicory," says Jochen Winkhoff of the vegetable department of the 'Zentralverband Gartenbau'. In France this percentage is at almost 50 percent.

In Germany around 14,000 tonnes of chicory is sold from domestic production annually. The volume may be small, but covers around half of the amount sold in Germany. The German consumers bought around 331 grammes of chicory per person in 2013. This is nine percent more than in 2012. No figures for 2014 are available yet.
