Coop expands Ünique assortment

A year and a half ago the Swiss retailer Coop launched their own sustainable brand 'Ünique', which was met with great success. Through doing this they became the first Swiss fruit and vegetable retailer, whose products do not meet the beauty ideal, to be given a place on store shelves. Coop is currently expanding their Ünique assortment, reports the German website Gabot.de. From here on out the company will offer items such as lemons, oranges, kiwi's and eggplants with small, natural defects.

"Ünique was very well received by our customers. This has encouraged us to further expand our assortment, and thereby show that fruits and vegetables that don't meet the defined marketing standards are still valuable food products," says Roland Frefel, head of fresh produce at Coop. In 2014 Coop sold more than 180 tons of carrots and 36 tons of pears under their own brand, Ünique.
