Aldi and Lidl: ten years on the Swiss market

Aldi and Lidl have opened 275 stores in Switzerland in the last ten years. Since then their assortment has become more versatile and the distance to the next supermarket has shortened, reports the Swiss newspaper 'Thurgauer Zeitung'.

When Aldi and Lidl wanted to enter the Swiss market ten years ago the consumers were hoping for lower prices on the Swiss market. Now it seems that a lot of expectations and fears were exaggerated. The price level barely changed. But this doesn't means that nothing changed in the Swiss retail sector. Experts confirm that the distance to the next supermarket is becoming smaller and smaller and that the choice for the consumers is becoming more varied.

Aldi and Lidl have also changed since they touched down in Switzerland. Fresh and regional products are more important and the supply of brand name products has increased. Aldi and Lidl are becoming increasingly Swiss, which is causing the once hated discounters to increase.
