Skillpack BV has represented the PFM brand, a leading producer of packing machines, since 2001. The installation of the first packing machine "PFM Hurricane" occurred in 2007 at Duijvestijn Tomaten in Pijnacker. At this year's Fruit Logistica, the grower was elected best tomato grower in the world. The company comprises 14.5 hectares of tomatoes, where individual round tomatoes, as well as cocktail, vine and plum tomatoes are grown and packaged for supermarkets, wholesalers and food service companies.
The machine suppliers are proud of supplying packaged tomatoes without a tray, for instance. "Like every innovation, the development of packaged tomatoes without a tray hasn't been easy, especially because it's a natural product. What's unique about packaging in this way, it that these are six tomatoes without a tray, packaged in foil. Through this method, without a tray, a sustainable product can now be packaged with a significant reduction in waste," Arjan explains.
In 2013, another completely new innovation was installed: a tomato drying line. "Duijvestijn processes the tomatoes it grows into fresh oven-dried tomatoes and tapenades under the Frezta label. Based on century-old hot water from deep within the earth, the tomatoes are slowly dried. This unique preparation method gives a soft, truly flavoursome tomato taste. This way, in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way, the dried version of tomatoes can also be supplied to retailers. This shows we, together with our clients, take the environment seriously," Arjan concludes.
