Light at the end of the tunnel for chicory market
The chicory market has had a difficult time, but growers and traders are finally able to see a light at the end of the tunnel. According to Rudi Coosemans, from the export/import company 'Coosemans', the market started improving somewhat near the end of last year, and has been quite stable since. "An upswing in the prices was extremely necessary for the entire sector. If the downswing had continued a lot of producers would not have made it."
More stable market
According to Coosemans, the prices are currently normal for this time of the year, "It is better than last year, so the situation is good. Around the 'carnaval' holidays there is normally a strong decline in price, but that did not happen very often this season. The market has become more stable. There were a few times that single pieces of chicory were cheaper, but the packaged chicory was generally at a good price."
Declining production
He hopes that the situation will continue, "The current prices are amounts that the producer must have. It has been low for a long time. I think that the whole situation has also improved because of the declining production, both here and in the surrounding countries."
