Europe: limited import of colourful lettuce

The supply of coloured lettuce remains limited in Europe, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website. Due to the cool temperatures and the lack of light over the last few weeks the growth of the lettuce plants in Southern Europe was slowed. As a result of this the import has become more expensive.

As well as this, the cultivation area in the greenhouses of South France has become smaller. Here the light lettuce varieties have mainly become even scarcer and their prices higher. This is mainly striking among oak leaf lettuce. Due to the high prices in France the German trading companies, who were focused more on the French lettuce so far, are now partially more interested in Italian imports. They tend to be cheaper.

The supply of lettuce from German cultivation is still very small due to the slow growth of the earlier varieties and is limited to the light lettuce varieties.
