They will export to the European market

Peru: First artichoke processing plant inaugurated in Cusco

Agrícola Alsur Cusco SAC invested nearly $12 million dollars to build the first processing plant of canned, fresh, and frozen artichokes that will be exported to the European and American market.

This modern agro-industrial plant has the capacity to process 200 tons of artichokes per day, 80% of the value-added product will be exported to Spain, while the other 20% will be sent to the US market.

This modern agro-industrial plant has the capacity to process 200 tons of artichokes.

The plant is located in the rural community of Markjo, in the Anta district. The project will create more than a thousand jobs and has the technical support of Sierra Exportadora.

In 2010, during the first stage of the project, the company Alsur only had 170 hectares of artichoke. However, the company approached the communities of the province of Anta and they currently have about 800 hectares of artichoke cultivation being processed in this modern agro-industrial plant.

Beneficiaries
This project also promotes the strengthening of the dairy sector's productive chain because the Agroindustrial Alsur Cusco SAC provides the artichoke's chaff to improve the nutrition at dairy cattle stables. This, in turn, increases milk volumes, which are destined for the production of other products in the cheese plants of Sierra Exportadora's Matured Cheese National Program, such as the Gloria SA Company.

It should also be noted that the agricultural Alsur Cusco SAC Company opened a nursery school for the children of the mothers that are working the fields and the Company's plant in the community of Markjo.
