Moroccan and Spanish tomatoes well represented in UK retail

This week's retail prices for cucumber, plum baby tomatoes and mixed chillies do not differ drastically compared to last week's retail prices. In a new report from ProduceView the retail prices of cucumber portions, plum baby tomatoes and mixed chillies were recorded. These prices are monitored by ProduceView at nine supermarkets in the UK, namely: Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, M & S, Waitrose, Lidl, Aldi, and Co-op. The prices have been monitored over the last 15 weeks.

Half Cucumber

The half cucumber has been monitored at seven retailers, Lidl and Aldi are not included. This week, there was a difference in price for the half cucumber. The half cucumber retail prices were still between £0.35 (Aldi, Sainsbury's, Asda, and Morrisons) and £0.45 (Co-op) per portion and the average price was £0.36 per portion. In general, the prices remained quite stable over the past 15 weeks. During the measurement period, the retailers supplied cucumbers from the UK, Spain, Morocco and the Canary Islands. The retailers supplied the cucumbers from the same country of origin as last week, namely: Morocco, Spain, and the Canary Islands.

Plum Baby Tomatoes

In comparison with last week, no major differences can be noticed. Also this week, the plum baby tomato is sold between £3.00 (Tesco) and £7.60 (Waitrose and Co-op) per kilo. However, the average price rose from £4.83 per kilo to £4.88 per kilo. The plum baby tomatoes were still included in the promotion at Waitrose this week. During the monitoring period, the plum baby tomatoes originated mainly from Morocco and Spain. In general, retailers interchange tomatoes from different countries, like Morocco, Spain, UK, Canary Island, and Portugal. Last week, Morrisons supplied tomatoes from Morocco and Aldi from Spain. This week, it is the opposite; Morrisons supplies the plum baby tomatoes from Spain and Aldi from Morocco.

Mixed Chillies

Over the last 15 weeks, the retail prices of mixed chillies remained stable. Also the retail prices of this week did differ from the retail prices of last week. The retail price of mixed chillies are between £7.50 (Aldi and Lidl) and £21.40 (M & S) per kilo. The average price is £11.66 per kilo. The mixed chillies are still included in the promotion at Sainsbury's. Over the entire measurement period, the mixed chillies came from many different countries; Mozambique, Kenya, UK, Egypt, Jersey, Senegal, Morocco, India, Spain, Portugal, France and Zambia. This week, the retailers supplied mixed chillies from Kenya, Senegal, Egypt, Morocco and Spain.
