UK: British cucumbers at Tesco and Waitrose

In a new report from ProduceView the UK retail prices of cucumber, salad tomatoes and red peppers were recorded. These prices are monitored at nine supermarkets in the UK, namely: Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, M & S, Waitrose, Lidl, Aldi, and Co-op. The prices have been monitored over the last 15 weeks. This week, Aldi and Lidl take the lead for the lowest prices on audited vegetables. The retail prices for these vegetables were the highest at the Co-op supermarket.

Cucumber

This week, the cucumber retail prices are between £0.44 (Aldi and Lidl) and £0.80 (Co-op) and the average price is £0.36. In general, the prices remained quite stable over the past 15 weeks. During the measurement period, the cucumber was only on promotion twice (Lidl). In general, the cucumbers are supplied from Spain. This week, however, the British cucumber made its entry at two supermarkets; Tesco and Waitrose.

Salad tomato

Also the salad tomato retail prices remained fairly stable at the retailers over the last 15 weeks. The salad tomatoes have been monitored at eight retailers, Tesco was not included. This week, the salad tomato is sold between £0.10 (Aldi and Lidl) and £0.17(Co-op) per tomato and the average price is £0.11 per tomato. During the monitoring period, the tomatoes originated mainly from Morocco and Spain. This week, they supplied tomatoes from the Canary Islands as well.

Red peppers

Over the last 15 weeks, the retail prices for the red peppers did not fluctuate a lot. This week, the retail price of the red pepper is between £0.49 (Aldi and Lidl) and £0.90 (Co-op) per red pepper and the average price is £0.56. Over the entire measurement period, the red peppers originated from different countries; Israel, Morocco, UK, the Netherlands and Spain. The last country, Spain, is the country of origin for the majority of the red peppers.
