Germany: majority of onions coming from southern hemisphere

Now that the end of the storage season in Northwestern Europe is approaching, Germany and many other European countries are importing onions from the southern hemisphere. This will last until the beginning of the new harvest, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) (Agricultural Market Information Service) on their website.

Harvest forecasts in the southern hemisphere are diverse. While production in New Zealand is less than last year, Australia expects the Tasmanian region to have a better harvest than last year's poor outcome. A few years ago New Zealand and Australia were not the only interesting onion supplying countries for Germany, Argentina and South Africa also had something to offer. However, change came when Argentina began prioritizing its neighbouring country, Brazil, where there is a high demand.
