US: Good supplies of specialty Tokyo turnip

“The Tokyo turnip is a specialty turnip that is grown year-round in the Santa Maria (CA) area”, says Ande Manos from Babé Farms. “It grows so well here because of the mild climate.” Production peaks between April and October, but quantities are still small compared to the traditional turnip. Babé Farms is one of the larger growers of the specialty variety in California.

The Tokyo turnip is distributed across the United States. “Demand comes from wholesale market places as well as distributors, who supply the product to high-scale restaurants and fine retailers. It is also a popular farmer’s market item. Demand is pretty steady year-round”, Ande said. This specialty variety is not available at the regular grocery store.

Prices of the Tokyo turnip do not fluctuate much. It cannot be compared with other generic vegetable commodities as there is only a very small group of growers. “In winter, when supplies are more limited, prices can jump up. Right now, availability is good and so are prices”, commented Ande.

Tokyo turnips have a mild taste and are very juicy. Their versatility allows them to be eaten raw, roasted as well as steamed.
