In 2014, Peruvian capsicum exports totalled $228.27 million dollars, 2.97% more than the US $221.67 million shipped in 2013, according to the Association of Exporters (ADEX).
Leadership in canned capsicum
The export of canned capsicum represented 58% of all capsicum exports. At the end of 2014, sales amounted to US $133.48 million, i.e. 7% more than the US $125.03 million obtained in 2013.
Exports to the United States (the main market destination for canned capsicum with 42% of the total) increased by 15%. Sales to Spain, the second largest destination with 31% of the market share, fell by 8% due to lower shipments of the piquillo variety.
Meanwhile, Germany and Canada accounted for 10% of the market share and had a high positive percentage change.
Dried capsicum exports also increased
In 2014, shipments of dried capsicum accounted for 39% of all capsicum exports and amounted to US $87.08 million, while in 2013 they totalled $86.5 million.
In 2014, exports of whole dried peppers amounted to $54.65 million dollars and exports of powdered dried peppers totalled US $32.43 million.
Meanwhile, exports of frozen capsicum, which had amounted to US $9.41 million in 2013, totalled to US $6.87 million in 2014. Exports of frozen capsicum are subdivided into whole capsicums and sliced ones. Exports of whole frozen capsicums amounted to US $3,790,000, while exports of sliced capsicums totalled US $3,080,000, in 2014.
Exports of fresh capsicum amounted to 0.4% of total shipments in 2014, and amounted to US $840,000, while they totalled US $730,000 in 2013. The main market is Italy with 71% participation and a positive 75% variation, followed by Spain with 19% share and a drop of 29% in value compared to 2013.
