HortNZ urges focus on fruit fly response
All efforts must now be focused on establishing the extent of the population, containing it and then eradicating it.
The new find is less than 200m from the original site and is almost certainly from the same source.
“We are confident this localised detection will be swiftly and effectively eradicated,” HortNZ president Julian Raine says.
The improvements in border controls announced by the Ministry for Primary Industries are welcomed by HortNZ.
“That’s going to provide a lot of confidence to our members,” Julian says.
Once again the New Zealand horticulture industry owes a deep debt of gratitude to the residents of the affected areas in Grey Lynn.
“We can’t thank these people enough for their concern and their vigilance.”
