Difficult conditions for French melon producers
The Association promoting Lectoure melons held their general assembly on Friday. The co-Presidents, Marie-Hélène Lagardère and Sabrina Signetti reminded everyone of the events that took place over the year, such as their participation in the Salon de l’Agriculture as well as their decorated truck in the Route du Sud. The Melon Festival took place over two days, a successful event judging by the 3,000 forms filled in during the melon tasting competition. The Lectoure melon was also present at other festivals such as Jazz in Marciac, the Astronomy Festival in Fleurance and the d’Artagnan festival in Lupiac. The Lectoure melon was also brought to Paris, for the floating markets in September, which was a great opportunity to show off local and regional products.
The association has, however, lost hope in attracting young people as it is a difficult sector. The General Assembly ended with a debate on production and marketing conditions, it should be noted that there are less and less producers and a supportive structure is needed for production.
