US: Avocado harvest expected to peak earlier

“Avocado consumption continues to grow. In 2014, it was up by five percent compared to 2013. Production in California on the other hand was down last year. This year’s production growth forecast is 15 percent”, says Rob Wedin from Calavo Growers. “California and Mexico, the two most significant avocado growers, are expected to have 15 percent more supply compared to last year.”

“California avocado harvest normally peaks in July, but it looks to be earlier this year”, said Wedin. “I anticipate harvest to peak between April and June.” California production numbers for March are expected to be twice as high as March last year. Despite an earlier harvest, the fruit has a good size. “Sizes are not too large, they are right around 48”, Wedin said.

Production increase is needed
Wedin is not worried about a forecast production increase of 20 percent. “I worry when production numbers do not grow”, he said. “Avocados are so popular and demand is growing about 15 percent per year. We need growth of supply to keep up with demand. Last year, we saw five percent production increase overall, which resulted in a 15 percent increase in prices. This year, prices seem to be more consistent. On average, 60s and larger are in the mid $30 range while 48s are in the high $30 range.”

Calavo Growers is a packer and shipper of avocados, working with growers as well as retailers, restaurants and wholesalers. Avocados are primarily sourced in California and Mexico. Hass is the largest variety by far. In summer, there is some supply of Lamb Hass, a late season avocado that is available from June through October.
