Moes Ozata active with Moes Quality Control for two years

"On leaving the building, customers will have reports in their mailbox"

Moes Ozata has been active in the fruit and vegetable sector for thirty years, from order picker to warehouse manager in a large storage and overhaul company and has specialised in quality in the last ten years. After have being employed for years, he decided to start up his own business two years ago with Moes Quality Control. "I work independently, but have collected a team of people around me, so that we can also offer a complete package for larger customers."

"I mainly work for companies in Barendrecht and the Westland. But I also travel to Belgium, and if the customer needs to me, I will go abroad," says Moes. The free enterprise suits him well. But he doesn't think it's getting any easier. "The supermarkets have a lot of power, the import streams are declining and customer expenditures are under pressure. This all has effects on my work. You can see that some trading companies are opting for their own quality controller from a cost point of view, but as far as I am concerned this is a short term vision. This means they are no longer independent and that's what a seller needs."

According to Moes customers like working with a small company. "The communication goes different directions with larger companies. I do well with speaking to and being focused on customers. I work with a rating system in which all information and photos are put in on site. At the end of the inspection a report is sent out right away. When I leave the building, the customer has the inspection report in their mailbox, which will give them a direct insight into the product quality."

"The quality demands haven't diminished over the course of the years. We measure a representative sample from the party based on a number of parameters, such as ripeness, colour, brix, skin damage etc. We give them quality scores and give an indication of the shelf life, to which we add a general comment, based on our experience," says Moes. He tries to think commercially during the quality controls. "Of course, good is good and bad is bad, but a grower is trying to supply a product which is as good as possible and not every product that doesn't get 100% has to be binned."
