Growing interest for Spanish Sanguinelli red orange in Germany

In mid-January, the Spanish Sanguinelli red orange season, which lasts until mid-April, kicked off. It is a variety characterised by its red skin and flesh which currently enjoys very reasonable prices compared to table oranges, like the Navel and Navelina, which are not going through the best of times. The Sanguinelli is not a common product and sales tend to focus on the gourmet market.

The main destinations for this variety are currently France, Italy, the UK and Germany, where there is growing demand, according to Abel Alarcón. "Visitors were curious about the Sanguinelli at the recent Fruit Logistica, in Berlin, where we see a growing interest from German importers and retailers," affirms Abel Alarcón, manager of Agrios Selectos, better known by its brand Brio Fruits.

Regarding the Italian market, Abel explains that, "so far, we have not started shipping Sanguinelli, as they still have other red varieties, such as the Moro, and they also have the Sanguinello variety, which is practically the same as the Sanguinelli. Only when Italy is finished with these varieties will we increase our volumes, by the end of our campaign."

Production growing in Andalusia
Sanguinelli oranges are following the same trend as other oranges this year, with greater demand for larger calibres, as they are the most appreciated. "We are finding these in Andalusia, since in Valencia plantations are older and calibres usually tend to be smaller," he points out.

According to Abel, Sanguinelli orange production is gradually increasing in Andalusia; however, and "despite new plantations being set up each year, demand continues to absorb 100% of the fruit on the market, with prices still at the same level as in previous campaigns."

Brio Fruits, specialised from the start in this red variety, celebrated its 40th anniversary this season. "We hope to continue working with Sanguinelli and expand their marketing over the next forty years," concludes Abel Alarcón.
