"70% of fresh mint consumed is used in mojitos"



"This is a family business; we are based in Facatativá, close to the Bogota region, and we have 16 years' experience in the export of fresh aromatic herbs," affirms Santiago Ángel, of La Corsaria.

The company is Colombia's largest mint producer and number one in sales. Demand for this herb has soared in recent times and "70% of fresh mint consumed is used in mojitos," points out Santiago.

La Corsaria also supplies products like basil, chives and tarragon. "Everything is fresh, harvested the day before and shipped by air; logistics have to be as efficient and speedy as possible, as these products have little post-harvest shelf life," says Santiago.


La Corsaria processes its herbs a few hours after their harvest to ensure the best quality.

When it started, La Corsaria exported mainly to the United States and Canada, but now it ships half of its production to the European market through a Colombian marketer. Santiago says that "we have registered great growth in the European market in recent years."

"We compete with countries like Ecuador or Mexico in the U.S., and in the European market we face competition from African countries and Israel. Our advantage is that we produce all year round and are not subject to fluctuations in productivity, so when it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, demand soars," states Santiago.

The company was present with great success at the recent edition of Fruit Logistica with the goal of signing new contacts and increasing sales in markets such as Germany and the Netherlands.
