US (CA): Good supplies of artichokes expected for Easter
Though a warm winter has thrown a wrinkle in the growing season for artichokes in California, growers are expecting plentiful supplies of artichokes by the Easter holiday.
“It's crazy weather we're having,” said Dale Huss, vice president of artichoke production for Ocean Mist Farms. “It's been so warm, and artichoke plants don't like it very warm or very cold. Artichokes require a certain amount of cold, which is called vernalization. But because last summer and last fall were warm, we had little production for the fall.” Despite the warm weather, Huss is optimistic about the upcoming spring crop.
“Annual varieties are doing well, and things should be normal going into the next few months,” said Huss. “So we're looking forward to a very productive spring with good supplies for Easter and the rest of spring and summer.”
