Season to kick off in March

Brazilian avocados expect good prices in Europe

The Brazilian Hass avocado season will start in March and continue until October.

"In February, we have already been harvesting some avocados of the Fuerte variety, then in early March we will start with large volumes of Hass, which will be marketed mainly in the European market," explains Vitor Falanghe Carvalho, of Jaguacy.

The company is growing at a 25% rate annually, and in 2015 it will export around 240 containers of Hass and 15 of Fuerte to the European market.

"We keep the Fuerte in our fields because it is an earlier variety, but I don't think it will have a good development in Europe in the future," states Vitor.

The Hass avocado market is becoming more competitive every season. Could the European market become saturated with the setting up of new plantations and the rapid growth in export volumes from countries like Brazil, Peru or Colombia?

"This season we expect good prices at the start, as Chile's volumes are not that significant. To prevent the market from saturating it is necessary to be smart in choosing the right time to export; our advantage is that we have a very long harvest period. We ship the most avocados at the beginning of the season to prevent overlapping with Peru's season peak; afterwards, when Peruvian volumes dwindle, we come back strong," affirms Vitor.

The company is also committed to the domestic market, where it registers a rapid growth rate.

"The domestic market is still small, but it is growing by 60% annually and we are very optimistic. Additionally, we are marketing new products, such as avocado oil, which has the same qualities as olive oil, but also allows you to cook at up to 250 degrees without it losing its properties," concludes Vitor.

Jaguacy currently only sells this product in the Brazilian market, but it plans to start marketing it soon also in Europe.
