Brandenburg: record harvest of blueberries

In the German state of Brandenburg, 50 companies cultivated berries on an acreage of 644 hectares in 2014, German website Proplanta.de reports. Compared to 2013, the acreage increased by 116 hectares, the Statistics Bureau Berlin-Brandenburg reports. The total harvest was also significantly larger in 2014. In 2013, the harvest was 972 tonnes, while one year later the harvest amounted to 1,544 tonnes (+56 percent).

The sea-buckthorn berry remains the most cultivated berry in the state. In 2014, this berry variety was grown on 338 hectares, more than half of the total berry acreage. Sea buckthorn was harvested from 139 hectares, since sea buckthorn can't be harvested off the same plant every year. The harvest yield was 2,540 kg per hectare (+41% compared to 2013). After the sea buckthorn, blueberries were cultivated most in the state, taking up 118 hectares (+10% compared to 2013). The blueberry harvest was 6,920 kg per hectare in 2014, a record yield.
