GMO plants reach area of 181.5 million acres worldwide

The cultivation of genetically modified plants has grown worldwide in 2014, reports the German website Proplanta.de. For the third time in a row the production in third world countries has exceeded that of industrialized countries, according to the report 'Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops: 2014'. This report was presented on January 28th by the 'International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech-Applications' (ISAAA). 

The cultivation of genetically modified plants grew in 2014 to 181.5 million acres worldwide. This is 3.6% more than in 2013. The largest producer continues to be the U.S. with a cultivation area of 73.1 million acres, followed by Brazil with 42.2 million acres and Argentina with 24.3 million acres. Of the 28 countries that grow genetically modified plants, 20 of them are developing countries and eight are industrialized countries.
