Onion acreage remaining stable

Onion demand is currently steady with pricing somewhat less than the past two seasons. Onion acreage for Idaho-Oregon area is stable at approximately 20,000 acres, which when harvested and packed is the equivalent of 30,000 truckloads at 40,000 lbs. “Our onions are used mostly by the foodservice industry and processors,” explains Chris Woo of Murakami Produce, “after that we go to chain stores and wholesalers.”

Murakami Produce plants onions in March and harvests from mid-August to the end of October. Storage options allow for onions to be packed and shipped until the end of April. The size of onions mainly consists of three inch jumbos with 85% yellow variety, 10% red, and 5% white.

“Most of our fresh produce is shipped domestically throughout the United States,” states Woo, “our export markets mainly concern Canada, Mexico, Panama, Japan and Taiwan.”
