Maurice Ott, Simba Vegetables

"I expect onion prices to rise"

Right now no licenses are being issued to Senegal. Maurice Ott, from Simba Vegetables, expects that Eastern Europe will be able to absorb these volumes. Although Simba Vegetables is only active in the European market, Maurice sees opportunities, "There are definitely enough onions, and the quality is good. The prices are not very high, but we expect that a bump in prices will come later in the season."

In the Eastern European market, an important market for Simba, demand is currently the highest in the Baltic states and Scandinavia, "There is also some demand in Southeastern Europe," says Maurice, "but, for example, in the Romanian market there is a real problem with the prices. There is still plenty of local product available there."

Beginning next week Maurice expects that the export to Eastern Europe will really get going, "Right now we export approximately 350 tons of onions to many different countries within Europe. We do not export outside Europe, so we are completely dependent on this market." Effects on the global onion market, such as Russia closing it's borders, only have an indirect effect on Simba.

Maurice expects a small rise in onion prices before the season ends, "Right now the prices are not very high (between 11-12 cents per kilo), but we expect a slight increase to come towards the end of the season." Simba had something created with their logo on it so they could attach it to the onion bags.

Simba Vegetables was established in April of last year. Located in Zwaagdijk, North Holland, The Netherlands the company focuses on exporting products that are grown within the region. Their products include: onions, potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, beets, parsnips and turnips. "We had a good year, with good results," concludes Maurice. You can find Maurice Ott and Robert Sijm at Fruit Logistica in Berlin this week on Thursday and Friday, "We look forward to meeting our customers, suppliers and colleagues."
