Idaho potato demand holds strong

Despite recent shipping and transit complications within the United States, Idaho potatoes are still shipping ahead of schedule when in comparison to last year. Prices on cartons for the foodservice industry are strong and have increased since last year while retail bags available for consumers have slightly decreased but remain stable. “Usually our challenges are harvest related,” explains Frank Muir, president of the Idaho Potato commission. “It’s usually variable in heat, cold, or rain. But this year we had a great harvest but are experiencing a transportation shortage.”

As the delay with west coast shipping continues, pressure is put on trucks and rail cars for produce delivery. The added inclement weather in the Northeast has also strained transport options. “We’ve signed a petition to encourage both sides of the west coast shipping issue to come to a rapid conclusion in order to help mitigate the situation,” states Muir.

High demand is attributed to the Idaho Potato Commission's unique approach to advertisement and customer appreciation. Potato Lover’s Month began in January and will run through to the end of February. “The demand deriving from this promotion allowed us to make large shipments before the storms,” declares Muir, “by promoting Idaho potatoes in this manner, we ensure they are in the forefront of consumers’ minds.”
