Germany: potato sales down 1.4%

In 2014, German consumers bought 1.4% fewer fresh potatoes than in the previous year, German website Fruchtnews.de reports, continuing the long-term trend, albeit at a slower rate. Sales in December 2014 contributed to this. Sales were nearly 4% higher then, than in December 2013, the current analysis of GfK data by German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) shows.

In 2014, nearly 86% of all potatoes for sale originated from Germany, and nearly 14% from abroad. That's about the same as the year before. Sales of potatoes were highest in the east and north of Germany. In the south-east, sales saw the strongest decrease over the past five years, 17.2%, followed by the north-west of Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia and the north-east of Germany. In central Germany, potato consumption saw the lowest decrease at -7%.
