Despite declines Florida Orange Juice is still number one

It’s no secret that the consumption of orange juice has consistently declined in recent years. However, many may be unaware that these declines track comparably with declines in production of Florida Oranges, due to HLB (also known as “citrus greening”).

Greening, which is spread by a tiny insect called the Asian citrus psyllid, affects the health of citrus trees and has been associated with premature fruit drop. There is no known cure yet; however, scientists and growers continue to research methods to combat and control it.

“Despite these declines, orange juice remains the nation’s most popular 100 percent fruit juice – and by a wide margin,” explains Doug Ackerman of the Florida Department of Citrus. “Thanks to the hard work of Florida growers, people across the United States and around the world can continue to enjoy the great taste and nutrition of 100% Florida Orange Juice.”

The Florida Department of Citrus tracks retail prices of 100 percent orange juice and grapefruit juice sold within the United States.

Consistent with the decline in production and the increasing costs citrus growers have absorbed, the price of the most popular form of orange juice, Not-From-Concentrate, has increased steadily since the onset of citrus greening.

“While the retail price of orange juice reflects the ongoing production issues, the value of 100% Florida Orange Juice remains strong,” Ackerman said. “One glass of Florida Orange Juice delivers great taste, vitamin C, potassium, folate, and has no added sugar – a rarity among beverages today.”
