Cuna de Platero's strong commitment to raspberries

FreshPlaza visited the facilities of Cuna de Platero, in the Andalusian municipality of Moguer, where the strawberry campaign is gaining momentum. The cooperative, which last year celebrated its 25th anniversary, consists of 80 partners and has about 800 hectares for the production of strawberries, as well as 100 hectares for blueberries and 60 hectares for raspberries, which translates to about 33 million kilos of fruit.

While strawberries remain the predominant berry for the company, as well as for the sector in general, raspberries registered the biggest growth in planted acreage from one year to the next.

"This campaign, we have decreased our strawberry production by 9% to diversify our range of berries. A few years ago we started planting blueberries, which continue to expand, and this year we decided to significantly increase the raspberry acreage and continue to expand in the coming seasons," explains Ela Daher, sales person at Cuna de Platero. "They are more difficult to produce than strawberries, both technically and financially," she adds.

The varieties grown by the firm are the Glen Lyon, as well as the Adelita for the past two seasons, to which it is strongly committed. "Adelita is a remontant variety with firm and intense coloured fruit and a long post-harvest shelf life. Due to it being remontant, it fills the gap in production left by the Glen Lyon, and we could even manage to work exclusively with the Adelita," states Juan Cejudo, technical manager of Cuna de Platero.

Moreover, Ela points out that "thanks to the qualities of the Adelita, we have managed to include raspberries in our premium product line Berrycatessen, under which only the highest quality berries can be labelled.

Germany, France, the UK and the Scandinavian countries are the main destinations for the raspberries, where, according to Ela, "we believe there is still potential for growth as far as consumption goes."

"At Cuna de Platero, we aim to be a leading agro-food cooperative with an international orientation and reputation, with a strategic and operational management plan based on efficiency, continuous improvement, adaptation to changes, innovation and product quality, ensuring that the expectations of our customers are always met," she concludes.
