US (WA): Range of prices on large apple crop
This year's large apple crop in Washington has made for lower prices on some varieties. But for other varieties that are new or popular with consumers, prices have remained strong through the season.
“Pricing has been kind of a mixed bag,” said Tim Evans, general sales manager for Chelan Fresh Marketing. “It's very competitive with Red Delicious and Golden Delicious apples, but we've seen really good pricing on some of the club and higher flavour profile varieties, like Honeycrisp apples.”
Even some of the traditional varieties, like Granny Smiths and Galas, are commanding decent prices, especially considering the large amount of apples available from Washington and other U.S. states this season. Evans added that movement has been good, which is a must during a season with such big volumes.
“The importance of invigorating your orchard and being at the front end of new varieties is still an important message to growers,” noted Evans. “New, fresh and different taste profiles are important to consumers, and they become more important every year.”
