Prices expected to drop in the coming weeks

Good weather boosts courgette production volumes

So far in 2015, courgettes have been trading at very high prices of over 3 Euro per kilo. This has been due, in part, to the significant shortages caused by the bad weather and low temperatures registered until recently in Almeria. Furthermore, we also have to take into account Italy's low productivity, badly hampered by the weather, as well as Morocco's, which supplies mainly France.

This week, however, a decline in prices has already been observed, with them currently standing between 2.30 and 2.60 Euro per kilo at origin. "Prices will continue to drop until they are back to normal in about two weeks," stated Sam Ashton, marketing director of Escobar y Castañeda.

"Most growers have finished planting their winter-spring crops and the weather is improving considerably, with temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius. In these circumstances, we are seeing significant growth in volumes that will be reflected in prices over the next few weeks," he explains.

Based in the municipality of Las Norias de Daza, Almeria, Escobar y Castañeda are specialised in the production and marketing of various courgette varieties, including green, white, yellow, Marrow and round courgettes. They are marketed under the KING COURGETTE brand and reach markets across Europe, including Scandinavia.

In the words of Sam Ashton: "The cultivation of courgettes is on the rise in Almeria, where our growers already have 150 hectares, and we hope to continue growing at the same rate as consumption has been doing in recent years."
