Brazil approaches Belgium and speeds up EU-Mercosur negotiations

Brazilian authorities presented their case before the Belgian ambassador to Brazil and are looking to accelerate the negotiations between the EU and Mercosur.

Armando Monteiro

The meeting between Brazil’s Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Armando Monteiro, and the Belgian Ambassador to Brazil, Josef Smets, who stated he was interested in deepening bilateral trade and agreed to convey the blocs concerns, evidenced this.

"The Mercosur is advancing, as the member countries are converging, and we are ready to present an offer to negotiate," said Monteiro.

The Brazilian official also noted that advancing the negotiations, which have been detained since 2013, between the two blocs is a priority for the Brazilian government.

Moreover, the Belgian ambassador expressed interest in expanding trade and investment relations with Brazil, especially in transportation, the ports, the pharmaceutical sector, the food sector, and in research and development.

Thus, they scheduled a visit by Belgium's Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Pieter De Crem, for the first half of March in which businessmen from both countries will get together.

"Our trade has had a certain stagnation in the last five years and this is an opportunity to find points of interest that will allow us to resume the flow of commerce through a more productive relationship," Monteiro said.
