70-75% of Polish apples still find export destinations

According to Jan Nowakowski, of Polish importer/exporter Genesis Fresh, last year’s mild spring temperatures and absence of frosts, as well as good weather conditions during the summer, have resulted not only in an increased apple yield, with good quality fruit, but also in larger calibres.

While this circumstance, in combination with the Russian veto, is resulting in a percentage of the fruit not finding any buyers, Jan assures that, “70 to 75% of our total production is still moving like every year. Of course, we will be left with some volumes that won’t be shipped to any markets, but we still have 5 to 6 months before the end of the season, so we’ll see.”

Alternative destinations have naturally been sought for this extra volume. In this regard, Jan states that, “unfortunately, China is closed, but some volumes will be shipped to the Middle East and North Africa. With Canada we are only just starting, so for now I don’t know if there’s any success there.”

Some shipments have also reached Singapore, where Polish apples have achieved some success at the country’s largest retail chain. “In this market, where they prefer one-coloured varieties, Gala apples, Red Delicious and other red varieties are the most popular,” affirms Jan. “Of course, we are also exporting to countries like Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.”
