Sweet peppers from Spain lead to price increase

German wholesale markets were dominated mostly by Spanish sweet peppers. That was stated by the German Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) in their current wholesale market report (no. 04/2015). The Spanish supply was low, but could be supplemented by Turkish, Greek, Moroccan and Israeli peppers, meaning, the whole demand could be covered. In the middle of the week the pepper prices for wholesale increased. This trend was shown for all Spanish pepper colours, but the red and orange varieties were the most expensive. Other Mediterranean competitors benefited from this and theirs could also increase. Only in Cologne did prices remain steady. Significant price changes didn’t take place there unless the quality was inadequate.

Supply of zucchini and eggplant remains low
Because of the small eggplants and zucchini supply, German wholesale prices increased. Temporarily, traders paid 15 to 20 Euro per 5 kilo of eggplant or zucchini. Despite the high prices, the vegetables sold pretty well. A similar trend was observed with Italian artichokes. Because of frost in Italy, 40 percent of the whole harvest was lost, increasing prices. For one kilo of artichoke traders paid 3 Euro. Prices for tomatoes increased a little because of a smaller supply. Prices for onions, lettuce and cucumber remained steady. Cauliflower supply remained mostly low. Because of this, prices remained high. Then prices decreased suddenly because of a reduction in demand, caused by the high prices.
