Eggplant is grown 12 months of the year in Australia, but production ramps up considerably between September and March, so the December decline had an impact on peak production periods. The market and the price have bounced back well though, according to Mr Parrington. “Obviously our volumes have increased on last year and our average sale price has come back, as expected.” The price has climbed from $1.80 per kilo to upwards of $2.85 per kilo.
Milder summer conditions in Victoria, with only a few days where temperatures were in the high 30s, has meant pretty smooth sailing for growers. Days of higher temperatures can cause some difficulties with irrigation in glasshouse growing situations. Last season was more difficult with extended periods of high temperatures, including overnight temperatures, according to Mr Parrington.
