Aussie Eggplant harvest bounces back from ‘difficult’ December

New customers choosing to buy from the glasshouse eggplant segment has meant major expansion and a return to a decent market price, according to reports from growers. “As expected our sales price was lower than last year, however we have experienced many new customers entering the glasshouse eggplant segment for the improved quality, reduced waste and consistency of supply,” notes David Parrington, of Flavorite Marketing. “December was a difficult period, as the entire vegetable category seemed to be in heavy supply, which left customers spoilt for choice.”

Eggplant is grown 12 months of the year in Australia, but production ramps up considerably between September and March, so the December decline had an impact on peak production periods. The market and the price have bounced back well though, according to Mr Parrington. “Obviously our volumes have increased on last year and our average sale price has come back, as expected.” The price has climbed from $1.80 per kilo to upwards of $2.85 per kilo.

Milder summer conditions in Victoria, with only a few days where temperatures were in the high 30s, has meant pretty smooth sailing for growers. Days of higher temperatures can cause some difficulties with irrigation in glasshouse growing situations. Last season was more difficult with extended periods of high temperatures, including overnight temperatures, according to Mr Parrington.
