Lidl to open largest distribution centre in Spain

On Wednesday the German supermarket chain, Lidl, has started construction on what will be the largest logistics centre in Europe. The plans for this were already announced three years ago. The centre is being built in Alcalá de Henares on a large plot of land next to the M-300, where a large branch of Electrolux was located until 2011. When this location closed 400 employees lost their jobs.

Due to the fact that hundreds of employees will be needed for the Lidl logistics centre, an agreement was reached when the plot was purchased, giving the old Electrolux employees priority, if they would like to work for the German company.

The centre is expected to open summer 2016. Lidl has opened a total of 530 stores throughout Spain and business has been doing well the last few years even though many Spaniards were hard hit by the crisis.
