Laser labelling to become more common

With a new partnership between Laser Food and JBT, the practice of etching labels directly on the skin of fruit could become much more common.

Laser labelling consists of using lasers to remove a minuscule area of pigment from fruit surfaces and apply a safe contrasting liquid to label the product. It can be used on almost any fruit or vegetable, and it uses all natural materials. Because it uses no paper, plastic or any other material used in traditional labelling, the process can cut down on costs and eliminate waste.

Under the new agreement, JBT will be in charge of sales and marketing of the Laser Food's laser labelling system. JBT is a global leader in food processing systems, and it supplies companies around the world with equipment and solutions to capture the freshness, taste, texture, appearance and nutritional value of fresh and processed fruits and vegetables.

“Through this agreement, this advanced technology will become accessible to fruit growers worldwide,” said Jaime Sanfelix, managing director for Laser Food. The deal will bring labelling machines closer to growers and packers around the world who wish to take advantage of the new technology. The process will be on display at this year's Fruit Logistica exhibition in Berlin February 4-6.
