Ciudad Altamirano

Mexico: Good season for mango production ahead

Carlos Torres Gonzalez, who is in charge of the campaign against the fruit fly in Ciudad Altamirano, said this year's mango for export production was expected to be good because it was an alternating year and because the mango trees were flowering exuberantly.

The staff of the Local Board visited the crops and confirmed that the mango trees in the region have had an excellent bloom, which indicates there will be a good production.

Furthermore, this is the year of alternation, i.e. one year the production is low and the next one it increases. The mango from Tierra Caliente has an excellent quality, which has allowed producers to open the US market for their Haden and Tommy varieties.

The town of Cutzamala de Pinzón is still the biggest producer and exporter of mango in the region and in the state of Guerrero, which is why it has its own local board.

In 2013 the mango for export production amounted to 6,871 tons and in 2014 it amounted to 5,462 tons. Thus, expectations are that this year's production will increase significantly.

Regarding the product's marketing, Carlos Torres said that the mango had opened at 6 pesos per kilo last year, but that it had decreased to 2 pesos over the weeks as the price is regulated by supply and demand.

It is critical for producers to have buyers, as many of them base their economy on this fruit year after year.
