German consumers want less packaging, more regionality
German consumers would reportedly welcome regional fruit and vegetable varieties being offered in supermarkets - preferably without plastic packaging, German website scharf-links.de reports. That's the outcome of a representative study by opinion research institute Forsa, commissioned by NABU. Over one thousand customers were asked about how and where they buy their fruit and vegetables, and what they require from the trade.
Regionality in particular is valued highly by the consumers. Three in four customers reported being interested in regional and special fruit and vegetable varieties. When it comes to packaging in the vegetable departments, the consumers also delivered a strong signal: 76 percent of the respondents preferred unpackaged fruit and vegetables. Only four percent preferred buying it packaged. To prevent plastic waste, 85 percent of customers is even prepared to bring along their own bag to the store to put the fruit and vegetables in.
