Germany needs more organic agrarians

Germany needs more organic agrarians, as the demand for organic food is growing and growing, whilst few companies have made the switch to organic production in recent years, reports the German website Proplanta.de. "The consumer wants organics from their own country, which is why politics has to clear the way for more organic agriculture," comments Jan Plagge, president of Bioland e.V., on this development.

Bioland wants politicians to take their own goal of a national sustainability strategy seriously. Over the next few years 20% of agricultural land is supposed to be being used for organic agriculture. In 2014 only 6.3% was used for this. The potential that organic agriculture offers as a contribution to climate and environmental protection, but also animal protection, are so far rarely utilised by politics.

"Organic agriculture is the agricultural model for the future. It includes solutions for the challenges in the area of climate and environment protection and makes the development of rural areas possible," says Plagge. This is why Bioland is demanding better political preconditions for more organics from their country. A number of central demands include sufficient rewards for the accomplishments in the area of environment and animal protection and combating a total revision of the European organic agricultural regulation.
