Italy: Record banana traffic in 2015

The weekly connection to Guatemala, Costa Rica and Colombia has started thanks to the new Cosiarma service, which in 2015 will bring 120,000 tons of bananas and pineapples to the Civitavecchia port.

This in turn means that banana traffic in Civitavecchia will reach a record figure of 250,000 tons in 2015, confirming the upward trend of the past three years.

The president of the Port Authority Pasqualino Monti explained that "the new agreement will create new jobs and make Civitavecchia the port of reference for the food sector in central-southern Italy."

Cfft CEO Steven Clerckx added that "thanks to the actions of President Monti and the cooperation of the Port Authority, the reliability of the Civitavecchia port was guaranteed, so we could win the competition against others and bring important brands like Chiquita and Simba, here. We are very pleased, especially since it is the first weekly service with Cosiarma, which is using ro-ro cargo ships. Over 50 people are needed for each ship-terminal operation cycle."
