Johan Wuyts, Groenhuis:

"Sales of fruit and veg rise in January due to New Year'sresolutions"

A new year starts with good resolutions for a lot of people. And this can be seen in the sales of fruits and vegetables. Johan Wuyts of Verswinkel and caterer Groenhuis from Heist-op-den-Berg says that this health trend in January certainly has an influence. "What is striking is that it is bad a few months before the holidays. It gets busy in mid December and it's fine in January. It's better than in the months before the holidays."

For traders the increased attention for health in January is a positive phenomena. "People eat more fruit, salads and raw food. Everyone wants to start the new year as healthily as possible. For as long as it lasts anyway," he laughs. "The weather also has a lot of influence on the sales. The sales are going better because it's a mild winter."

Cara Cara orange

There are regularly products in the spotlight at Groenhuis introducing the customer to new products. "At the moment we have our Cara Cara oranges on promotion. They are very special, light pink inside and taste delicious. People can taste them first. The fun thing about this variety is that they aren't harvested until they're at their best. For 'normal' oranges there is always a certain pressure on the harvest, as it has to be done on time. But a Cara Cara grower waits until their product is perfect."

The trader is glad that the young tomatoes from home soil are coming earlier every year. "A number of years ago there were still only the Spanish available. Now we already have Belgian ones. It's a great product to have on your shelf."
