Middle East picking up for Indian pomegranate export

The Indian pomegranate season has been running since the end of December. The heavy rain and hailstones which fell a few weeks ago and affected the grape production also affected some of the pomegranate growing regions. According to Kalpesh Khivasara, General Manager at INI Farms, the volumes exported this year will be down by around 10-15%. "The unseasonal storms affected the skin quality of the pomegranates in some of our farms and this cant be shipped to Europe."

INI Farms exports to the Middle East, SE Asia as well as to the European markets. The company also supplies pomegranate arils as well as whole fruits.

Khivasara said the Middle East is picking up well, as there are no other pomegranates in that market. We are seeing very good results in the Middle East as well as in SE Asia. The Middle East is currently on the same level as Europe as far as volumes go, but expect that in the next few years it will overtake it."

EU prices are around 10-12% less than last year, Khivasara explained this is mainly because of the value of the currency. "Prices should increase very soon when the last of the Israeli pomegranates are out of the market, then there will be only Indian pomegranates on sale."

INI Farms has shipped to Russia in the past but this year the rouble is in a worse state than the Euro and so far they have not packed for this market. Shipments to Europe will stop in April when the Chilean and Peruvian pomegranates hit the the market. Having its own orchards allows INI Farms to ship pomegranates and arils to different markets throughout the year unlike any other country cultivating pomegranates.

The strong focus on quality has resulted in long standing customers in various markets. INI Farms is GlobalGap certified its arils processing unit is HACCP and ISO 22000 certified. It is also a SEDEX member from 2015.
INI Farms is exhibiting at Fruit Logistica 2015 in Berlin. Their stand number is Booth 1, C-04, Hall B, City Cube.
