Iceberg lettuce shortage continues

Spain is one of the most important suppliers of iceberg lettuce for Europe in the winter. But due to the cold around the holidays the supply situation is completely upside-down. After previously rich export amounts, the export from Spain has now collapsed, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website.

In the main cultivation region Murcia the wintry conditions, with temperatures reaching below zero, have radically reduced the growth of the lettuce. This means there is a gap in the harvest at the moment until at least the end of the month. The weekly export potential has decreased from 12,000 tonnes in December to 7,000 tonnes presently, a decrease of over 40%. These circumstances mean the prices among German wholesalers have risen strongly.
