German carrot market recovers

Last year, German carrot growers suffered due to the pressure of a vast supply. For the whole year, the average consumer price for one kilo of German topless carrots only went above one Euro a few times. These low prices and full warehouses have muddied the mood amongst German carrot growers.

Price increase since November
Regarding the Agricultural Market Information mbH (AMI), the market has slightly increased since November. According to AMI information, this was primarily the result of current stocks not being as high as first thought. One reason for the decline in stocks is that stocks have a high amount of sorting waste. The damage done by mice is one of the biggest problems this year.

The Russian crisis is not having a major effect on German producers. It is also not having any major impact on the German carrot market. The main reason for this is the fact that German carrots are mostly regional products. Germany exported less than 500 tons of carrots to Russia. A local carrot producer from Germany confirms: “We grow only a little for abroad. About 90% will go on the national market, because of this the Russian crisis has no effect on our business.” Only the producers who export big, oversized carrots to Russia have big problems: “To date, it has always been the Russian market that bought those big sizes. There are a lot of such sizes. But this market has now completely collapsed in Europe.”

Second half of the season looks good
AMI is sure that, regarding the mainstream market trend, the carrot producers have made it through the worst part. The second part of the season, until May, will be positive. The local carrot grower does not want to make a commitment yet: “Currently it is difficult to make a real assessment of the market developments. Its hard to say how the crops will be. Especially in southern Europe. When it comes to the price, important factors are the volume and also when the producers from southern Europe enter the market. All this of course is closely related to the climatic conditions.”
