US: Mango imports low, prices high

Mango imports from Ecuador and Peru have been lower than in previous seasons, and light supplies have made for a tight market. As the last of Ecuador's shipments reach the United States, Peru's shipments have been slow to take off.

“Prices right now are pretty good, not just because Ecuador's shipments have been lighter,” said Patrick Dueire of Dayka Hackett, “but also because the transition between Ecuador's and Peru's mangos has caused a gap in supplies.” Dueire estimated that imports from Ecuador were around 25 percent lighter than imports from the previous season, and with Peru's imports arriving later than usual, prices have been strong.

“There was a late harvest in Peru,” explained Dueire, “and then the first shipments went to Europe before coming to the United States. So we're just now seeing fruit here, around three to four weeks late.” On January 16, prices for a flat of Kent 7s and Tommy Atkins 7s were between $9.00 and $10.00 at both Philadelphia and South Florida ports of entry, and prices were between $10.00 and $11.00 at Southern California ports of entry. Dueire estimates that current prices are about two dollars higher than what he normally sees this time of year, and while prices may go down once more fruit arrives from Peru, they could remain strong for some time.

“We expect Peru to be light for the whole season,” said Dueire. “So that means there's going to be a strong market for the next few weeks.”
