More of broccoli with Broccoleaf

Launched last September, Foxy Organics' Broccoleaf broccoli leaves have caught the attention of consumers heading into 2015. Taking advantage of the normally discarded part of the broccoli plant, the product has sparked interest among consumers hungry for a new nutrient-packed vegetable.

“We were looking to increase sales by focusing on a vegetable that can be consumed at breakfast,” explained Matt Seeley, vice president of Marketing for Foxy Organics. “So we embarked on a juicing initiative, and one of our growers suggested we try broccoli leaves. We brought it to a juicer, who said it was great because you can get a lot of juice out of the leaves, and when we sent the leaves for a nutritional analysis we found that the leaves are a very good source of vitamins.” The analysis revealed the leaves are excellent sources of vitamin A, vitamin K, calcium, vitamin C and folate. The leaves are also relatively easy to harvest, as they're already removed before the harvesting of broccoli.

Broccoleaf is now available nationwide on a year-round basis. It's organic, and the health benefits and versatility of the product have garnered it attention from the media and consumers.

“The leaves can be cooked, baked, put in soups and put in salads,” said Seeley. “People are becoming more familiar with it and the media have gravitated to it because it fits in with a new year, new you mindset that's popular at the beginning of the year. We're very excited about it because it goes naturally with healthy juicing and cooking that is popular, so consumers will seek it out.”
