Israel: Good start Orri clementine

Recent storms in Israel spared much of the Gilboa Orri clementine production. While some orchards were hit hard, harvesting is expected to resume this week. In the rest of the country there are areas that have ha severe damages.

“It looks like the damage from the storm is not as severe as was predicted earlier in the Gilboa Valley,” said Oron Ziv of Befresh Europe. “The western side of the valley saw some damage, especially on young fruit that didn't have the protection of leaves. People have renewed harvesting and fruit looks nice.”

“There are predictions of more rain, but nothing big,” added Ziv. “I expect packing and harvesting will be in full swing by next week.”

The start of this year's Orri clementine season has brought good prices. Ziv noted that good fruit was going for about two Euro a kilogram. Those prices, noted Ziv, have given growers no reason to complain.

The good market has been partly due to light competition from Spanish and Moroccan fruit. While Europe remains the main recipient of Israel's exports, the nation's clementines, especially the Orri, are shipped to many countries around the world, including the United States, Australia, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom.

“The first arrival of fruit was received well in France,” said Ziv. “We still have two and a half months left in the season. It's early, but, so far, the season looks very promising.”
