US (CA): Celery market remains stable

While cold weather has led to low production and higher prices for broccoli, greens, and cauliflower from California, celery supplies have remained stable. The steady nature of the market is due to the resilience of the commodity in the face of adverse weather.

“Celery is a durable vegetable,” explained Mark McBride of Coastline Produce. “It has a waxy exterior, so it's resilient when it comes to weather.” There was some damage to the leaves that cover the plants, but those are removed during harvesting, so there was no net damage or production hit. Prices have remained stable, with prices for a carton out of the Coachella Valley between $13.95 and $16.45. That price range is normal for this time of year, which makes it rare among vegetables right now.

“Broccoli and leaf lettuce have all had issues with the cold,” explained McBride. “Those all have tight markets, but prices for celery have hung in the low double-digits, which is normal for this time of year.”
